Determining your audience

You have been writing for a little while now and you are starting to feel a bit more comfortable with putting your work out there for the public to see. How can you determine which audience to target?

Your audience should be filled with the people who will be the most receptive to your work. This means that you will need to consider who will be able to understand, appreciate, and enjoy your writing. You will want to make sure you are choosing the appropriate age group to target and that you are tailoring your work to those who are most likely to pick up your piece.

Think about other writers who are doing something similar to you. Who are they targeting? How do they reach out to their audiences? Are there any other routes you can take to get your message out to the intended consumer? What do these people have in common?

It’s important to get to know your target audience to make sure your work is heading to the right places. Have some people from your audience give you feedback on your work so you can see where changes should be made. This may result in tweaking your writing a bit, but it could also show you that you’ve been trying to reach the wrong people entirely and you will need to refocus your efforts.

If you aren’t sure about who your audience is, offer samples of your work to others and see how they respond to it. Determining what each person resonates to will help you better understand how your work is coming across overall.
